Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has confirmed that Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman will miss the club’s LaLiga clash against Athletic Bilbao scheduled for tonight.

Lookman is still recovering from an adductor injury he sustained during last weekend’s Copa del Rey final defeat to Real Sociedad.

The 28-year-old attacker was also unavailable for Atletico’s recent loss to Elche CF, raising concerns over his fitness ahead of a crucial period in the season.

Simeone said the player is not yet ready to return, adding that taking him off during the cup final helped prevent the injury from becoming worse.

Champions League target

The Nigerian international is now expected to focus on regaining fitness in time for Atletico’s UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal on Wednesday, April 29.

His possible return would be a major boost for the Spanish side as they prepare for one of their biggest matches of the campaign.

LaLiga title race heats up

Meanwhile, leaders Barcelona have the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table when they face Getafe CF.

The opportunity comes after Real Madrid dropped points in a 1-1 draw against Real Betis on Friday night.

Madrid had looked set for victory after Vinicius Junior scored from a rebound following an effort by Federico Valverde. However, a late equaliser from Hector Bellerin damaged their title hopes.

With five matches remaining, Madrid now trail Barcelona by eight points.

Mbappe fitness concern

Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa also addressed the substitution of Kylian Mbappe, who was taken off in the closing stages of the match.

Arbeloa said the forward felt some discomfort and would be assessed in the coming days.

Madrid will now shift attention to their next league fixture against Espanyol.
