An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti has sentenced two men to death by hanging after finding them guilty of armed robbery and conspiracy.
The convicts, Ojo Olasunkanmi, 31, and Obamoyegun Dele, 31, were initially arraigned in January 2020 alongside Adewale David, who died during the course of the trial. The charges against them were later amended in March 2025.
The court heard that the defendants carried out the robbery on August 11, 2018, at Oganganmodu, off Igbole Road in Ido Ekiti, where they targeted multiple victims.
According to the prosecution, the men were armed with guns and axes when they attacked residents, carting away valuables including mobile phones, a Toyota Sienna space bus, a DVD player and cash.
One of the victims, Bosede Ojo, told the court that the attackers struck around 1 a.m., posing as officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to gain access to the premises.
She said the suspects ordered occupants to open the gate, then forced their way in by scaling the fence and breaking security barriers before carrying out the robbery.
The case was reported to the police the following day, leading to an investigation and eventual prosecution.
The prosecuting counsel, O.B. Ayeleso, presented nine witnesses and tendered several exhibits, including the defendants’ statements, an axe, SIM cards, mobile phones, the recovered vehicle and photographic evidence.
The defendants, represented by their lawyers, did not call any witnesses in their defence.
Delivering judgment, Justice Bamidele Omotoso ruled in favour of the prosecution, holding that the evidence presented established the offences beyond reasonable doubt.
The judge subsequently convicted the two men on all counts and sentenced them to death by hanging.
