The National Youth Service Corps has confirmed the death of a female corps member in Maiduguri, Borno State, following reports that she fell ill shortly after arriving at the temporary orientation camp.

According to the state NYSC Coordinator, Nasir Bello, the corps member died at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital on Monday evening, April 27, after being taken there for treatment.

He stated that she had an underlying health condition prior to arriving at the camp.

Bello maintained that the deceased did not take part in camp drills, explaining that she had been unwell from the time she reported and was assisted by medical staff even during her registration process.

He declined to provide details about her medical condition, noting that such information was not within his authority to disclose.

However, accounts from individuals within the camp present a different sequence of events. Some sources claimed the corps member collapsed after evening drills on Monday before being rushed to the camp clinic and later transferred to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead.

A security official at the camp said the drills earlier in the day had proceeded without incident, but the corps member later collapsed in the evening at her hostel, prompting emergency medical attention.

Another corps member suggested that the deceased had been managing diabetes, adding that there were claims her medication had been withheld at the camp gate, though this has not been officially confirmed.
