A former teacher in Michigan has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after admitting she engaged in a sexual relationship with a teenage student she was tutoring, a case that has drawn strong condemnation in court.
Jocelyn Sanroman, 27, pleaded guilty to third-degree sexual conduct after revealing to a colleague in 2025 that she had been involved with the 16-year-old student two years earlier. At the time of the incident in 2023, she was working as an educator at Oakside Prep Academy in Waterford Township.
Investigators found that the encounters took place at the student’s home, and the court heard that Sanroman had recorded the act, a detail that the presiding judge described as deeply troubling.
During sentencing, the judge criticised her actions as reckless and exploitative, questioning her judgment in engaging in such conduct with a minor and documenting it. When asked to explain herself, Sanroman acknowledged her actions briefly, saying she had exercised poor judgment.
Her defence team argued that underlying mental health challenges contributed to her behaviour, describing the incident as a serious lapse in judgment while stating she is attempting to take responsibility and improve herself.
The victim’s mother told the court that the impact on her son has been profound, saying he has become withdrawn and fearful, forcing changes to his education and daily life. She said the experience had disrupted his sense of normalcy and security.
In addition to her prison term, Sanroman will be required to register as a sex offender for life in Michigan.
The case has emerged alongside renewed scrutiny of teacher misconduct in the United States, following a separate incident involving another educator in Florida that also raised concerns about professional conduct in schools.
