Few cases in English football history have generated as much intrigue, legal complexity, and widespread debate as the ongoing financial charges surrounding Manchester City.
UEFA launched its own investigation and, in February 2020, banned the club from European football for two seasons while fining them €30 million — a punishment City successfully appealed at the Court of Arbitration for Sport just months later.
However, the Premier League continued its own probe, and in February 2023, the English top-flight issued a seismic statement: Manchester City had been formally charged with 115 alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules spanning nine seasons, from 2009-10 through to 2017-18.
The charges ranged from alleged failures to provide accurate financial information and details of player and staff remuneration, to alleged non-compliance with UEFA’s FFP regulations and, more recently, alleged failure to cooperate with the Premier League’s investigation.
After years of delays and legal wrangling, the independent hearing finally got underway in September 2024, running for 12 weeks before concluding in December of that year. Yet, as of now, no verdict has been delivered to the public, a fact that has frustrated clubs, pundits, and fans across the football world alike.
Now, a fresh report has brought the matter back into focus. Colombian football journalist and broadcaster Cesar Augusto Londoño has claimed that a resolution is imminent – and the potential consequences for the club could be unprecedented.
Taking to X, he wrote:
“Manchester City would be sanctioned with a deduction of 60 points for 115 breaches of Financial Fair Play. The official announcement of the punishment will be made before the end of the season. This sanction would take the club to the last place in the Premier League and it would be condemned to relegation.”
It is important to note that Londoño’s claims are alleged and unverified at this stage. No official confirmation has been made by the Premier League or the independent commission overseeing the case.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has also floated the possibility of a points deduction in the range of 40 to 60 points if the most serious charges are upheld, though he has noted that relegation as a direct sanction is unlikely given the specific rules under which the charges fall.
With the verdict still outstanding and the stakes this high, all eyes in world football remain firmly fixed on what promises to be a landmark ruling — one that could reshape not only Manchester City’s immediate future, but the broader landscape of Premier League football.
