It has not been the debut season on Merseyside that Alexander Isak would’ve hoped for.
After experiencing a hugely disrupted pre-season as he manoeuvred his way out of Newcastle United, it took him a while to get up to speed.
Adjusting to a new system and a new club is difficult for any player but without the right preparation before the beginning of a season, it can de-rail progress.
That was evident with Alexander Isak, as he had seen how prolific he could be in the Premier League but for some reason it wasn’t clicking for him at Liverpool.
To make matters worse, when we finally began to see glimpses of the Alexander Isak the club had invested so much money into, he broke his leg after opening the scoring against Tottenham Hotspur in December.
Out of action ever since then, it is thought that he will be back available for selection after the latest international break when Liverpool face PSG in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
The price tag that brought Alexander Isak to Anfield was a British transfer record fee and with such a deal being struck, there is undoubtedly pressure placed on the player to perform.
Arne Slot has stressed throughout the season that Alexander Isak was signed for the long-term and immediate success is not guaranteed.
However, it hasn’t stopped the Swede from receiving a fair amount of criticism.
Former Bayern Munich player and president Ulrich Hoeneb has been the latest person to direct negative attention Alexander Isak’s way after launching a bizarre dig at the player when talking about Harry Kane.
In an interview with Kicker, the German said: “It was a bit of a risk [spending 100million euros on him in 2023]. But he’s played incredibly well for us in recent years. If we consider the price-performance ratio, I’d say 150 million. But then you see that Alexander Isak of Liverpool cost 150million euros. If e’s worth 150 million, then Harry is worth 250 million euros.”
Liverpool will be confident that throughout his time at Anfield Alexander Isak will justify that price tag, as he initially arrived as one of the best strikers in the Premier League, if not world football.
At 33, Harry Kane has now perfected his craft, whereas 26-year-old Alexander Isak has many years to not only re-find his form, but improve even further.
