There is perhaps no name more synonymous with Liverpool Football Club than Steven Gerrard. For a generation of supporters, the idea of him one day managing the club has never really gone away.
It lingers quietly in the background, surfacing every time a managerial question mark appears over Anfield. It feels less like a conversation and more like unfinished business.
Gerrard impressed at Rangers, winning the Scottish Premiership title and ending Celtic’s dominance, before a challenging period at Aston Villa ended in dismissal in October 2022 after just 11 months. After a spell at El-Ettifaq, Gerrard left the Saudi Pro League in January 2025 and has not taken on a management role since.
But he was back at Anfield as recently as last week, captaining the Liverpool Legends side in their charity match against Borussia Dortmund legends, looking every bit the figure supporters still adore and linking up in midfield with Thiago Alcantara.
Gerrard also spoke on the Overlap this week, and amid all the turmoil at Anfield this campaign, was asked if he still dreams of being the manager of Liverpool Football Club in the future:
“I’ve got a brilliant connection with the club, probably a stronger connection since I left. Any area I could help the club in I would always try and do it,” he replied before asserting he probably was not ready to the Liverpool manager:
“Do I want to manage Liverpool sometime in my life? Of course that’s a dream. But would I be ready right now, to take it on for a longer period of time? Probably not.”
He then revealed that he would be open to a return as an assistant to an “elite” manager that may come in the future:
“It depends who it is, how the conversation goes, and does he need me? What does he think I can offer?”
“You’d have to understand it before you sign up to it, what the role is, and it’s to support the manager, it’s to be that assistant.”
“I would do it for Liverpool Football Club if I was asked and they felt that I was the right man to do it, I’d be up for it, of course.”
Gerrard is not positioning himself as Slot’s replacement; he is simply leaving a door open.
The fact that he would consider an assistant role suggests a man who understands his own development as a coach is not yet complete, and who values a return to Anfield on the right terms over a return at any cost. For Liverpool fans, that humility will only deepen the affection.
