Darwin Nunez’s future is already uncertain just months after his move from Liverpool to Al Hilal. The Uruguay international joined the Saudi Pro League side for £46million after playing a role in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign, scoring seven goals in 47 appearances in his final season at Anfield.
However, his time in Saudi Arabia has quickly stalled. Nunez was de-registered from the league squad following Karim Benzema’s arrival, leaving him unable to feature in domestic matches since February.
Head coach Simone Inzaghi said: “The decision was difficult, but that’s the job of a coach. He makes many decisions every day, even in every training session. Nunez and Pablo Mari are good players. I want them in all competitions, but we know the restrictions on registering foreign players.”
The 26-year-old has been limited to just two appearances in the AFC Champions League, which operates under separate registration rules.
Further disruption came when the competition was suspended amid ongoing regional conflict, delaying his return. A suspension in February also ruled him out of a key tie against Al-Sadd, and Al Hilal’s subsequent elimination on penalties means he will not play again this season.
Off the pitch, a major ownership change could yet impact Nunez’s future, with PIF and Kingdom Holding Company agreeing a deal for KHC to acquire a 70% stake in Al Hilal. The new ownership may reassess his situation.
The sale aligns with PIF’s strategy to maximise returns and redeploy capital within the domestic economy, supporting broader efforts to drive growth and diversification in Saudi Arabia. It is part of a wider push to create long-term value and further develop the country’s sports sector.
PIF has been the majority shareholder of Al Hilal since July 2023 as part of the Saudi Sports Clubs investment and privatisation project, helping accelerate the club’s development and boost the sport sector’s contribution to national GDP.
Chairman of Kingdom Holding Company Prince Al Waleed bin Talal said: “Al-Hilal Club represents a national symbol and a source of pride. Our acquisition reflects our deep belief in the role of sport as a developmental force for both the economy and society.”
Despite his club struggles, Nunez was included in Uruguay’s squad for March friendlies against England and Algeria, making a brief combined appearance.
His future has been widely discussed, with interest emerging during the January window. Fenerbahce have been linked with a move, while Juventus and AC Milan are also reportedly monitoring his situation ahead of the summer.
Nunez has made 24 appearances for Al Hilal in all competitions, scoring nine goals and providing five assists. Al Hilal remain competitive, sitting second in the Saudi Pro League with 68 points from 28 matches – eight behind leaders Al Nassr, with a game in hand.
