  • Szoboszlai’s current deal expires in 2028
  • Contract talks have not progressed
  • Sends message to fans after Everton win

Dominik Szoboszlai has sent a clear message to the Liverpool fans regarding his future at Anfield as he enters the final stages of his current deal.

The Hungarian has just over two years left on his current contract and has revealed that contract talks have not progressed. He remains focused on the remaining matches in the season but hopes to be at the club for the foreseeable future.

The £70 million signing from RB Leipzig has been a versatile addition to the squad, as he has played in multiple roles in the midfield and also as a make-shift right-back when needed this season.

Speaking to the media after the 2-1 win over Everton, Szoboszlai said that there was no update on his negotiations. He admitted that his family is happy in Liverpool, and he loves the fans, making him lean towards a renewal at the club. He said:

“As I said (a few weeks ago), there has been no real progression. So I cannot say anything new about my contract situation. We have a lot of games to go, and I am focusing on that. Of course, I see myself here in the long term, but as I say, it is not really in my hands any more. I love being here, as I’ve said many times. I love the fans and I really like to be here. My family is happy. Let’s see.”

Szoboszlai relaxed over Liverpool talks

Liverpool have taken contract negotiations down to the wire with Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Andy Robertson in recent months, but Szoboszlai is relaxed about his future. He insisted that the focus remains on the upcoming matches and not his contract talks.

“I’m completely relaxed. We have five games to go. Then I am going to rest – a big one, after my international break. Then we will see. The fans’ support, it means a lot. Every time they chant my name, it means a lot. I think we made it clear what happened against Manchester City at the Etihad.”

The Hungarian has been the bright spark in this gloomy season at Anfield, scoring 12 goals and assisting nine times in his 48 appearances across all competitions. He provided the assist for Van Dijk’s 100th-minute winner against Everton on Sunday, and revealed that it was ‘amazing’ to leave the Hill Dickinson Stadium with all three points.

“It felt amazing. We had quite a few corners and chances, like they did. But to win a derby like this in the last second, we couldn’t ask for more. We were happy for each other to get the three points but also for the fans, because we know what it means for them, and also it means a lot for us to win a derby. It was a long time (since last away derby win, in 2021).”

“Also last season away, we couldn’t manage to win, but this season we could. I’d rather win it like this than 3-0 or something, you know! This is more enjoyable to watch I think for the fans for both sides, actually. At the end, maybe they were the unlucky ones, but we are happy to take the three points.”

The win helped Liverpool take a giant leap towards UEFA Champions League qualification after Chelsea slipped up again and lost 1-0 to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

Arne Slot insisted last week that Liverpool’s future is bright despite the subpar season. The head coach claimed that the foundation of the squad was such that it would be impossible not to be successful, and Szoboszlai has backed his comments.

The midfielder said it would be a tough end to the season as they play teams right around them in the table, but is confident they can do well. He said:

“A win always changes the mood but we have to stay on the floor and keep working hard every day. We have to keep fighting for the Champions League spots and it is going to be hard games ahead of us. It is always hard when you play against the teams that are close to you – Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace. You have to always be ready and to fight for them.”

“I think what [Arne Slot] said [about Liverpool having a bright future] is right. We brought in new players – young, talented players. We know what they can do and that they can help the team – that is why they are here. I’m really looking forward to playing with them for the next five games, for sure, and hopefully in the future as well.”

Liverpool are sitting fifth in the Premier League table – the final UEFA Champions League qualification spot – with 55 points from 33 matches. They are seven points clear of Chelsea, Brentford, and AFC Bournemouth, while also being just three adrift of third and fourth-placed Manchester United and Aston Villa.
