Adidas has sparked outrage among some Everton fans after its tongue-in-cheek post following Liverpool’s Merseyside derby win.

Virgil van Dijk’s stoppage-time winner saw the Reds claim bragging rights in the first meeting between the two sides at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Everton’s new home after leaving Goodison Park last summer.

The game had looked to have been heading for a draw until the Liverpool captain rose highest to meet Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner and power his header beyond Jordan Pickford, leaving the hosts devastated as the Reds completed a league double over their neighbor, having also won 2-1 at Anfield back in September.

Reacting to Sunday’s victory, Liverpool’s kit supplier Adidas posted a picture of the Reds’ celebrating Mohamed Salah’s first-half opener, captioned with the message: “New house, same colour,” along with a red circle emoji.

The post was obviously poking fun at Everton, and the Toffees’ failure to beat their rivals in their first game at their new home ground. Inevitably, it hasn’t gone down well in the blue side of the city.

The post on X was inundated with replies from furious Everton fans, many of whom vowed to never wear any Adidas clothing again.

“I bought some gear which I won’t be bothering to collect after this post. Ta!” wrote one supporter.

Another replied: “Idiotic post. Won’t be buying another Adidas product again and will advise 1000’s more also.”

Meanwhile, another angry Everton fan said: “Not sure who signed this tweet off but I think it’s gonna cost you a few quid. Stupidity.”

The victory leaves the Toffees with a mountain to climb if it is to catch Liverpool in the race for a top-five finish, having missed the chance to go within two points of their neighbors.

The Reds though are well placed to secure Champions League qualification ahead of a crucial five games, with Arne Slot’s side now needing a maximum of nine points to guarantee a spot at Europe’s top table next season.

Reacting to Sunday’s win, the Liverpool boss said: “Throughout the season, all these games with all these games and the limited players available have hurt and cost us quite a lot of points.

“But today is definitely a day for the fans to be happy. That’s what we will be.

“We are going to enjoy it. My staff, my players and me. There is no difference between us and the fans; we would have loved to have had a better season than we’ve had.”
