Upcoming Channel 4 drama Falling is about a love story between a Catholic priest and a nun
Channel 4 viewers have said they “can’t wait” after the broadcaster shared a trailer for upcoming drama Falling.
Starring Keeley Hawes and Paapa Essiedu, the series from Adolescence writer Jack Thorne is about a “forbidden love story between a Catholic priest and a devoted nun”.
The teaser shared on Instagram showed Keeley as Sister Anna. She meets and falls for priest David, played by Paapa, who is set to play Professor Severus Snape in the new Harry Potter series.
They are seen grappling with their feelings, with David insisting: “You shouldn’t love me.” And a tearful Anna confessing in church.
“Both are deeply committed to their work in the church and in their community,” said a synopsis.
“Neither are expected to fall in love. But when they do, both are forced to wrestle with what it means for them, their vows, and their relationship with God.
“Falling is a witty, moving, contemporary romantic drama that is as honest as it is full of heart.”
Viewers were gripped by the trailer, with some posting messages on social media predicting that the series was going to be emotional.
“Well that’s going to break my heart!” said one, while a second added: “Nothing hotter than a forbidden nun-priest romance.”
“Oh so we’re crying then,” said another, as someone else commented: “Anything with Ms Hawes is amazing TV!”
“So excited for this!!” exclaimed another viewer, as one quipped: “Sorry I can’t come into work, yes, no, binge watching, I mean, I have flu, ok bye!”
“Can’t wait to see this,” penned another person, as someone else pleaded: “I hope this will be internationally distributed.”
Speaking when Falling was announced, Keeley said: “I’m thrilled to be taking on the role of Anna and so looking forward to working alongside the brilliant Paapa Essiedu to bring Jack Thorne’s beautiful scripts to life.”
Paapa added: “Falling is a story that has Jack Thorne’s singular talent of mining the sublime out of the ordinary running all the way through. I can’t wait to work with Keeley, Peter and the rest of the team to bring this world to life.”
The cast also includes Jason Watkins, Niamh Cusack, Adrian Scarborough, David Dawson and Susan Brown.
Falling is coming soon to Channel 4.
