Armed police were scrambled to a street near a school in Salford following reports of a man with a knife.
Officers attended the incident on Liverpool Road in the Cadishead area at around 9am on Tuesday morning.
Dramatic body-worn images from GMP officers showed the moment the suspect was Tasered and fell to the ground while appearing to hold a knife.
Shouts of ‘put it down’ could be heard moments before the man was then detained.
A man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and remains in custody for questioning.
There were reports that a nearby school followed lockdown procedures, however this has not yet been confirmed. Police said the Taser was used to ensure the suspect was safely detained and was ‘in line with specialist training’.
Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Jones, of GMP, said: “Public safety remains our absolute priority. Today’s incident demonstrates both the effectiveness of rapid public reporting and the professionalism of our officers in responding to a potentially dangerous situation.
“The deployment of the Taser 10 – the first incident where we have used the new technology – provided officers with a critical less-lethal option to resolve the incident safely and proportionately.
“GMP continues to invest in training and the latest technology to ensure officers are equipped to respond to emerging threats while maintaining the highest standards of accountability and public trust.
“Uniformed officers will remain in the area to provide a visible and reassuring presence for the local community following this incident. If you have any concerns, please speak to them.”
