Coronation Street fans think Maggie Driscoll is about to be killed off after an epic showdown with Megan Walsh that aired at the end of Thursday night’s episode
Coronation Street fans think Maggie Driscoll is about to be killed off. The matriarch, who is played by Father Ted star Pauline McLynn, turned up towards the end of last year to take over the Rovers Return Inn with her family.
Since then, she has been at the heart of numerous dramatic storylines, and it was revealed with a flashback episode set in her native Ireland that she had killed her husband Alan by pushing him down the stairs several years ago. It then emerged that Maggie had had an affair with Jim McDonald (Charlie Lawson) several decades ago, meaning that the legendary army man was the father of her son Ben Driscoll (Aaron McCusker), not Alan, as he had brought up to believe.
Amidst all this, Maggie has recently discovered that her grandson Will had been having an illicit relationship with his teacher, Megan Walsh (Beth Nixon), and the pair had an epic showdown that aired at the very end of Thursday’s episode, which was released early on ITVX.

Coronation Street has undergone numerous format changes over the last few years, moving it away from the traditional linear exploration of everyday life on a Manchester backstreet, and viewers are now in the middle of a much-hyped Murder Week.
A flashforward earlier this year that confirmed that either Maggie or Megan, or one of her fellow antagonists- Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard), Theo Silverton (James Cartwright), or Jodie Ramsey (Olivia Frances Brown) would be killed off in scenes that are playing out this week, with each episode detailing the same day’s events but from each character’s point of view. On the latest instalment, Megan had already been at the mercy of Leanne and Toyah Battersby, as well as Maggie’s daughter-in-law Eva, when they dragged her into the flat and tried to persuade her to confess all to the police, and she stormed out of there with a bloody nose, courtesy of Toyah.
Later on, Megan was standing around the back of the Rovers when she overheard newcomer Melanie, previously married to Ben, discussing Maggie’s past crimes with her, and Megan did not hesitate to record it all on her phone. Moments later, police arrived to arrest Eva and Leanne for their earlier actions, and an epic showdown ensued between Megan and Maggie.
Storming over to the precinct flats, where Megan had been on the phone to someone called Charlie, Maggie followed Megan down some stairs and slammed the door. But some fans think that, whilst Maggie may have form as a killer, Megan could easily be the one to turn on her.
One fan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “The ending with Maggie walking behind Megan and closing the door. Love it.” Another guessed: “Maggie corners Megan under it, they tussle, and one shove into a loose pillar brings the whole thing crashing down. Maggie dies, Megan flees.”
A third wrote: “Maggie would be a disappointing surprise vic, but I could see Megan get sent down for murder even if she didn’t do it and Will turning on her, finally bringing her grooming abuse to light.” It all comes just hours after actress Pauline admitted that bosses had warned her when she signed on to appear on the soap that her character would eventually be killed off.
Asked how she feels about playing one of the soap’s many antagonists, Pauline said: “It’s nearly the biggest compliment I’ve been paid for a long time! I’m not interested in nice people. I far prefer to be a villain.” The star then revealed that she was told early on that Maggie would not be leaving the soap alive.
“She added: “I will say this, when I joined the show, I was told that the plan for the character was to kill her. So we shall see! I think you’ll find when you watch all of the five stories that it’s very possible more than one person is dead, that’s another thing I will say.”
Pauline then teased that it could indeed seem like Maggie is the victim in question by the end of the week, but warned fans to not be so sure.
She added: “I do seem very dead at the end of the week. Assume nothing. You might be being fed one thing which is true, but it could be more than one. It’s also brilliantly clear that any one of the five could be a killer, whether or not they’ve killed the person you believe to be dead or not. It’s brilliantly seeded in. There is a justice in Coronation Street, if you do a crime, you have to pay the price.”
Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks said of the big week: “It was a very complicated storylining process! I did lose a bit of sleep and my hair went a little bit greyer. Usually in a murder week you’ve got one victim, then the suspects – we had five potential suspects had to make sure all the stories aligned, made sense and they were all getting to the right place and coming together.”
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
