The Gilgo Beach murderer, Rex Heuermann, has confessed to killing eight women over a 30 year period and now his estranged wife has made a chilling admission about their family home

Asa Ellerup might still processing the shocking news that her husband was the Gilgo Beach killer but she revealed a shocking truth as he admits to eight murders. Ellerup was married to a serial killer Rex Heuermann and unaware of his brutal truths for three decades.

Heuermann, a Long Island architect, initially confessed to killing seven women and transporting their bodies to the Suffolk County area before admitting to another murder to Ellerup. And now she has opened up on her confusion to his double life, revealing she knew him as a “family man” away from his dark secrets.

But it’s news of the family home that shocked viewers of Peacock’s documentary The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets. Ellerup admits she has been sleeping in what producers called the vaulted “kill room” of their Long Island home.

The room is said to have been the disturbing location of where Heuermann brought seven of his victims – three of whom he dismembered.

Speaking on the documentary, Ellerup said: “The brutal truth is that Rex Heuermann said he dismembered the bodies in this room. I’m here because I do feel spiritual. I am trying to say spiritually, in my own way, that I am really sorry for what these victims went through.”

The room was originally Heuermann’s childhood bedroom and Ellerup has changed it to be a functional basement. It now has a green Hello Kitty bedspread and shelves of plushies and Panda bear stuffed animals.

The docuseries showed the space with its floral paintings and a cross on the walls. Despite saying it had been “completely gutted and redone,” Ellerup said the space still gives her nightmares as she remembers the harrowing events that took place in the space between 1996 and 2010.

She went on: “Every night that I go to bed and go to sleep, I am haunted by dreams. Every night. It will never go away. It will follow me for the rest of my life. There will never be any justice for anyone, and there will never be any way to forget about this.”

Heuermann confessed to the murders of Amber Lynn Costello, 27; Megan Waterman, 22; Melissa Barthelemy, 24; and Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, who were famously known as the “Gilgo Four”. He also confirmed he killed Valerie Mack, 24; Jessica Taylor, 20.

Chilling details emerged after Heuermann was arrested outside his office in Manhattan in 2023 and charged. Benjamin Torres, the son of murdered Valerie Mack, recently filed a lawsuit against Heuermann, claiming his mother was “tortured ferociously, and her body dismembered”, The Guardian reports. As per this wrongful death lawsuit, filed by attorney John Ray, Torres, who was just six years old at the time of Valerie’s murder, has been “deprived of his mother’s care, guidance, protection, nurture, society, and economic support”.
