Channel 4 has announced a true crime drama based on the 2011 murder of a TV executive

Channel 4 has announced a new drama about the murder of a TV executive who was attacked and left to die in a burning vehicle.

Vengeance: Murder On The Heath will tell the story of Gagandip Singh, 21, who was killed in 2011. His unconscious body was put into a car boot which was subsequently set alight in Blackheath, south-east London.

He was killed in revenge after he allegedly attempted to assault a medical student six months before he died, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Harvinder Shoker received a life sentence in 2012 with a minimum term of 22 years. Darren Peter received 12 years for manslaughter. The medical student was jailed for six years for grievous bodily harm.

Vengeance: Murder On The Heath examines police interrogations, text messages, court records and fresh interviews.

The new drama will feature British Asian actors including Sasha Desouza-Willock, Dee Ahluwalia, Ikky Kabir and Safiyya Ingar.

Other cast members include Laila Rouass, Shubham Saraf and Asim Chaudhry.

Bafta-winning writer and director Aysha Rafaele said: “As a British Asian filmmaker with a background in documentaries, I am fascinated by real stories from our community that are both specific to the culture but also resonate well beyond it.

“Everything about the shocking murder of Gagandip Singh and the circumstances surrounding it was to prove extraordinary.

“How young everyone involved in the case was, how an accusation of attempted rape led to these young people taking the law into their own hands – playing at being God themselves – instead of just going to the police, and how this vigilante-style justice backfired so horrifically.”

Shaminder Nahal, head of specialist factual at Channel 4, added: “This powerful and gripping series takes us straight into the hearts and minds of a group of young people navigating a messy world of blurred lines, fear, shame and violence.
