A Netflix crime drama, compared to Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs, is returning to the streaming service this week.
Netflix users are in for a treat as the second season of a gripping crime drama is dropping this week, five years after the first episodes premiered. The Chestnut Man first landed on the streaming platform in 2021, based on a book by Søren Sveistrup. It left viewers impressed and currently commands a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.
The follow-up, titled The Chestnut Man: Hide and Seek, is based on the follow-up novel. It arrives on Thursday and follows returning detectives Mark Hess (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) and Naia Thulin (Danica Curcic) as they come together to investigate twisted killings “connected to a children’s rhyme”. Sofie Gråbøl and Katinka Lærke Petersen also make up the cast.
According to the official synopsis, “A 41-year-old woman is reported missing, and when the police unravel her digital footprints, it becomes evident that she has been stalked for months.
“An unidentified perpetrator has been playing an involuntary game of hide and seek, surveilling her while sending her not only images and videos but also a seemingly innocent nursery rhyme-style counting song.
“When the woman is later found murdered, it becomes evident that this case can be linked to a similar, unsolved murder case of a 17-year-old high school student who was found murdered two years ago. But what is the connection between the two victims? And when will the perpetrator begin to ‘play’ hide and seek again?”
The Chestnut Man delighted viewers in 2021, and drew comparisons to Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs, with many branding it a “classic” mystery on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Erie, creepy, and intense. It was somewhat hard to watch. Yet at the same time, it was also very compulsive,” one wrote. “The mystery element was well done and the reveal in the end was surprising.
“There was enough delving into the private lives of the protagonist that gave character development to the Series. Also, kudos to the folks that dubbed the movie. I thought it was pretty seamless.”
“The Chestnut Man is a noir series that reminds one of the 90s style classics like Seven and The Silence of The Lambs,” a fan raved. “Great pace, you never feel bored. It didn’t go cliché with a waste of time romance. All in all, it was an excellent season one. I’m not sure if they can top this with a second season.”
“The Chestnut Man kept me at the edge of my seat,” another said. “If you want to be entertained with great characters and performances, thrilling plot and a hair-raising finale, well this is it. I declare myself addicted to Nordic Noir.”
“It’s very gripping right from the start,” a fan added. “Lots of twists keep you hooked till the end. I don’t have patience for stupid formulaic plots with predictable outcomes. This was definitely edge of the seat suspense with so many turns and bends. LOVED IT!”
The Chestnut Man is available to stream on Netflix now, with the second season premiering on May 7.
