A woman accused of “plotting the demise” of a boy was caught red-handed by a hidden camera as she tried to tamper with the child’s medication.
Emma Jane Williams, 41, faces a murder charge after she was arrested in January. Birmingham Crown Court has been told that Williams looked up “the worst thing you could mix” with the boy’s medication on the internet.
Prosecutor Timothy Harrington opened the Crown’s case against Williams today, saying the woman was “plotting the demise” of the alleged victim. The boy can’t be identified due to a court order.
Williams, of Erdington in Birmingham, denies a single count of attempted murder, which is alleged to have been committed on the date of her arrest in January. Alleging that Williams had used her mobile phone to search for the effects of specific liquids on certain types of medicine, Mr Harrington told jurors: “The defendant tried to kill (the boy) and she did so by interfering with his important medication on a number of occasions.”
Williams’ conduct was “not a one-off” but was “considered, planned, deliberate action” designed to end the boy’s life, the prosecutor said. Mr Harrington added: “She also researched how to do it and acted upon it.
“She has never given any sensible explanation for the evidence against her.” After asserting that the only explanation for the evidence is one of guilt, the Crown’s barrister played hidden camera footage to the court and told the jury: “Unfortunately for her she was caught red-handed.
“This wasn’t a moment of madness, this was deliberate. This was no accident, this was no mistake.
“Emma Williams has never given a sensible explanation for that footage. The true horror of what she did was revealed when she was caught on that covert footage.”
