One woman asked for advice on how to get rid of weeds on her patio – and people swear by this simple three-ingredient homemade weed killer spray that could help stop them coming back

The solution to eliminating weeds from your patio might already be sitting in your kitchen cupboards.

As countless households prepare to refresh their gardens before summer arrives, among the essential tasks is removing all the weeds that have emerged during the damp winter months. Weeds are unsightly wherever they appear in the garden, but become particularly troublesome when sprouting between patio slabs.

Fortunately, there’s a straightforward method for clearing patio weeds using a homemade weed killer that requires just three everyday household ingredients – which you likely already have stored away.

The tip was posted on the Mrs Hinch Gardening Tips Facebook group, following one woman’s plea: “I have numerous weeds coming through my block paving. I’m fed up of weeding them all to be just as bad the next week. Any ideas please?”

Responses flooded in with helpful suggestions, with numerous people recommending she create a mixture of white vinegar, washing-up liquid and salt to destroy weeds and ensure they don’t return.

One commenter shared: “I use white vinegar, washing-up liquid and salt. It works fab; I swear by it.”

Another person said: “Salt, vinegar, water and washing-up liquid mixed and sprayed on the area.”

A third contributor offered additional guidance on preventing weed regrowth, suggesting: “One of the reasons weeds grow through block paving is because the silicone sand needs replacing. I only use distilled white vinegar, table salt and washing-up liquid mixed water to eradicate these problem weeds naturally.

“But once they are gone, brush in silicone sand right up to the level of the block paving; this stops wind-born weed seeds from entering to soil level through the blocks. You can get silicone sand from a good builders merchant.”

We previously highlighted how a horticultural specialist had advocated the identical solution for eliminating weeds.

Wendy Graham, founder of environmental blog Moral Fibres, advised filling an empty spray bottle with one litre of white vinegar, three generous tablespoons of salt, and three teaspoons of washing-up liquid.

This concoction can then be applied directly onto weeds to destroy them and prevent their return.

We discovered table salt available for as little as 40p online through M&S, though it’s also stocked in supermarkets including Morrisons for 65p, and Asda for 70p.

White vinegar is most affordable at Tesco, priced at just 35p. Washing up liquid at Asda costs only 62p, while it’s also available at Tesco for 62p. This means you could acquire everything required for this tip for as little as £2.72
