Many viewers are curious about Nick Blaine’s fate in The Testaments after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale

Nick Blaine’s fate in The Testaments novel is a surprising one, given the events of The Handmaid’s Tale TV show.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale and The Testaments novel by Margaret Atwood

The Testaments TV series will be hitting screens this week on Hulu in the USA and Disney+ in the UK, serving as a sequel to the The Handmaid’s Tale.

The new show will again be adapted from Margaret Atwood’s 2019 sequel novel The Testaments and follow the next generation of young women in Gilead.

The Testaments comes a year after The Handmaid’s Tale wrapped up when season six and ended things on a controversial note, including June Osborne’s (played by Elisabeth Moss) failure to rescue her daughter Hannah Bankole (Jordana Blake).

Another key character audiences are keen to know about is Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) and his role in The Testaments – here’s everything you need to know.

Is Nick alive in The Testaments?

In The Testaments novel, Nick is very much alive and helping to fight against Gilead alongside June.

The pair are described as being neck-deep in Mayday as they attempt to take down the fanatical regime.

In the book, Nick even meets his daughter Holly at the end after the family is reunited after leaving behind Gilead.

However, The Handmaid’s Tale TV series took a huge turn away from both the original 1985 book and The Testaments novel.

Season six killed off Nick after he boarded an aeroplane, along with other high-ranking Commanders, which was blown up by an altitude bomb that Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) had taken on board in an ultimate act of redemption.

This means that Nick won’t be appearing in The Testaments as his character is very much dead, even though he is alive in the source text.

Given that season one of The Handmaid’s Tale essentially adapted the events of the novel, the TV show had to break new ground as it continued to follow life for June and her struggles against Gilead.

Nonetheless, The Testaments was published in 2019, prior to season four premiering and so the makers of The Handmaid’s Tale made a deliberate choice to diverge from the TV series.

Eric Tuchman, who served as co-showrunner and writer on The Handmaid’s Tale season six, previously shed light on the decision behind Nick’s death.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: “We decided on Nick and Lawrence’s deaths when we were first breaking the season. Once we decided on Nick’s betrayal midway, that led to his fate — and Lawrence’s combined with that.”

Season six saw Nick betray the resistance movement Mayday and June when he gave away intel that led to the murders of the women at Jezebel’s in a brutal massacre, essentially sealing his fate in the eyes of the writers.

Meanwhile, Moss – who also serves as an executive producer on The Testaments – said about the character’s fate: “I do think Nick really loved Nichole [who is now going by her real name, Holly].

“I think June will tell [her and Nick’s daughter] all of the good things about her father.

“She’ll tell him how much she loved him and how much he loved her.

“She’ll tell him how much her parents loved each other and that ultimately, I think he would have done the right thing if he had gotten the chance to do it again.”

The Testaments premieres on Disney+ and Hulu on April 8
