John Simm has returned for a new season of the ITV crime drama Grace
One of ITV’s long established crime dramas Grace is back for a sixth outing with John Simm reprising the title role and a whole host of new cases to solve.
The popular crime drama, set in Brighton and Hove, features John as Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, who oversees a range of cases after previously being tormented by his wife’s disappearance.
The sixth series which launched on Sunday, March 29 is set in the aftermath of ACC Cassian Pewe’s betrayal which hangs heavily over East Sussex Police as the team is in the midst of an anti-corruption enquiry while Roy wrestles with whether to trust Cassian’s intel about Sandy’s murder and the threat to Bruno’s life.
Meanwhile, his team is plunged into a case filled with secrets after a Brighton property developer reports his wife missing.
Within minutes of the new series starting, fans were taking to social media to share their delight at its comeback. Posting on X, formerly Twitter, one viewer said: “Time for a new series of Grace Amazing! #Grace.”
A second commented: “Such a great series isn’t it, glad it’s back! #grace.” And another said: “Woohoo, the gang back together #Grace.”
Many were thrilled to see Life On Mars and The Lakes star John back as Roy with one saying: “John Sim (sic) is looking good. #grace.” Another fan added: “John Simm is a ridiculously underrated actor #Grace.”
Others were busy reacting to the fact that Grantchester’s Alphy Kottaram star Rishi Nair was in the opening episode, titled Left You Dead, as morally ambiguous Neel Siddiqui.
One viewer said: “Didn’t know Alfie (sic) had left the priesthood and moved away from #Grantchester.” Another said: “Crossover of our two @ITV detectives tonight with Rishi Nair appearing on #Grace in a completely different role #Grantchester.” And: “Watching #Grace and i keep expecting Robson Green to pop up somewhere #Alphy #Grantchester.”
The new series also stars Richie Campbell, who portrays DI Glenn Branson, and Zoë Tapper, who portrays Cleo Morey and features four standalone films, adapted from characters in the bestselling novels by internationally acclaimed author Peter James. These include Left You Dead, Capture You Dead, Dead Man’s Game, and One Of Us Is Dead.
While all previous instalments have drawn from James’ novels, the latest season marks a departure, with one episode neither based upon nor named after any of his books.
Executive producer Phil Hunter explained that this particular episode represents a writer/producer-driven narrative, focusing on women’s safety within a university campus setting.
“It’s a very sombre and important issue, and something that is sadly, very relevant,” Phil disclosed.
“We worked with Caroline Carver [actress and screenwriter] on that story, and I think it was to make sure that, as a topic, it fit within the kind of vernacular of the show.
“Because obviously they’ll go out on a Sunday night to entertain people, so it was to make sure that we were addressing that topic with the right level of respect to it, and so that the threat and violence towards women was considered. And I’ll say justifiable, but in the eyes of the killer and the motive of our aggressor on screen.”
The fresh series of Grace also welcomes back Laura Elphinstone, who reprises her role as DS Bella Moy, alongside Brad Morrison and Juliette Motamed as DC Nick Nicholl and DC Vee Wilde. Guest stars include Rishi Nair, Ali Khan, Sara Powell, Chizzy Akudolu, Dylan Corbett-Bader, Peter De Jersey, and Amir Wilson.
Grace is on ITV1 on Sundays at 8pm and ITVX
