Martin Clunes appeared on Sunday’s episode of Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh

Martin Clunes made an appearance on Sunday’s episode of Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh.

The actor, 64, has been busy recently appearing in the likes of Hollywood Blockbuster, Wuthering Heights, alongside Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. Meanwhile, Martin recently appeared in Channel 5’s Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards.

However, while Martin has an impressive career of various roles he is best known for portraying Dr Martin Ellingham in the fan favourite ITV comedy-drama Doc Martin.

The show follows surgeon Doc Martin, who has developed haemophobia, as he leaves London to start a practice in the sleepy village of Portwenn. However, his lack of social skills soon ruffles feathers amongst the locals. It made its debut in 2004 and it last aired in 2022.

Appearing on Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh, Martin revealed that the hit series has been made into a US remake called Best Medicine. So while the original series is currently off-air, fans can still get their fix in an American format.

Giving his seal of approval to the American adaptation, Martin has joined the cast as Robert Best, the father of Dr Martin Best, played by Josh Charles.

Martin said of the series which aired its first episode earlier this year: “They’re doing the American version of Doc Martin now and I went down and I guest [starred in it] as his father in one episode.”

Although he joked: “When they offered, I said: ‘Oh have they got someone who’s good at ageing make-up?’ and that was the last time that conversation was had!”

Martin continued: “There’s a guy called Josh Charles [who plays lead Dr Martin Best], who is really good, and they’ve just… their first series has been a success so they’re going again. It’s all shot… It looks like it’s in Maine, but it’s upstate New York, so it’s very pretty.”

Host Alan, 76, then asked: “Was it just one episode for you then, or…?” to which Martin revealed: “No, I think I’ll go back next time. That’s what they’ve said anyway, we’ll see!”

With Martin joking: “Well, yeah, but I’m just this American old guy [in Best Medicine]” with Alan responding: “Oh, so you are playing an old American guy. You’re not playing [Doc Martin] right…” with Martin confirming this was the case.

Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh airs on Sunday mornings at 9:40am on ITV and ITV X.
