It has been a mixed period for Liverpool, and the inconsistency is starting to show in both results and transfer priorities.

The latest setback came with a 2–1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, a result that marked the club’s 10th league loss of the season.

That is their worst record since the 2015/16 campaign.

Despite an early equaliser from Milos Kerkez, a brace from Danny Welbeck sealed the result.

Liverpool now sit fifth on 49 points, chasing a Champions League spot behind Aston Villa and Manchester United.

There was a positive response in Europe.

The team delivered a 4–0 win over Galatasaray at Anfield to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

That performance showed what this squad can do on its day.

The squad itself has changed a lot.

Liverpool spent over £417 million across recent windows.

Hugo Ekitike has stepped up with 17 goals this season.

Mohamed Salah has only five league goals and missed the Brighton game.

In midfield, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai have carried the creative load.

At the same time, attention has already turned to the summer.

Inquiries for Eduardo Camavinga are reportedly on.

The French midfielder is not the only player reported to be on the club’s radar as one Brazilian winger is also said to be a player of interest for The Reds.

If reports are true, then there are plans for him to join ahead of the 2026/27 season.

However, that deal now looks to be under threat.

Liverpool have been pushing to sign 21-year-old Allan Elias of Palmeiras as part of a long-term plan, viewing him as a potential successor to Salah due to his pace and direct style.

However, according to Espirito de Porco, Newcastle United are now leading the race.

The report suggests they are preparing an “irresistible” €46 million package to secure his signature.

The move is expected to happen in the summer window rather than immediately.

Allan has been in strong form.

He has made 19 appearances in 2026 and scored four goals.

He has played a key role in Palmeiras’ strong run, helping them win the state championship and sit top of the league.

Palmeiras are in a strong position.

They are working on a new contract that could run until 2030, with improved terms and a higher release clause.

That gives them leverage in negotiations.

For Liverpool, this is a setback.

The club has invested heavily and is planning for the future.

But this is a reminder that the transfer market is competitive.

And right now, Newcastle are making the stronger move.
