Liverpool have struggled to mount a serious defence of their Premier League title and are expected to turn to the transfer market this summer to refresh the squad.

A poor run of nine defeats in 12 matches towards the end of last year derailed their campaign, leaving Arne Slot’s side in a battle to secure Champions League qualification.

Despite significant investment – around £450million on players including Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz – further reinforcements may be required to return to title contention.

Mohamed Salah’s departure after nine years will leave a major gap in attack. Although he has not hit previous heights this season, the 33-year-old still contributed 10 goals and nine assists in 34 appearances.

His durability over the years has also meant limited opportunities for others to step in. Liverpool have long been linked with PSG winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, while emerging talents are also on their radar.

One such name is 19-year-old Yan Diomande, who has impressed in Germany with 11 goals and eight assists this season. The RB Leipzig forward has admitted Liverpool is his father’s favourite club, fuelling speculation over a potential move.

He told BILD earlier this month: “It was always his great wish to see me there someday because he loves the atmosphere at Anfield.”

However, the Reds face strong competition. Paris Saint-Germain are monitoring Diomande and have already made enquiries about the player, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. Romano suggests that a firm push from PSG could ultimately shape the future of Diomande.

The youngster, under contract until 2030, is highly rated and could become the subject of a major transfer battle if clubs formalise their interest.

Romano said on his YouTube channel: “There are more clubs following him, including, for example, from what I’m told, also Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern. So it’s not only the Premier League, but also Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern have made their checks on this player.

“So it’s a very open race. I would not underestimate Bayern and PSG because if they decide to go in, the two clubs can be really powerful in a race with Premier League clubs. So it’s going to be a big race, but for sure a top talent to watch in this window.”
