PSG have reportedly responded to all the outcry over their proposal to reschedule their Ligue 1 title decider with RC Lens in April.
PSG’s bid has sparked major controversy in France, as the champions look for every possible advantage ahead of their Champions League quarter-final with Liverpool.
The game at the Stade Bollaert is currently pencilled in for April 11, just three days after Luis Enrique’s side host the Reds in Paris and three days before the decisive second leg at Anfield.
Lens have already issued a furious statement making clear they do not want the date changed, arguing that French football “cannot be an adjustment variable” for one club’s European ambitions and warning that the credibility of the league is on the line.
In the face of that backlash, PSG have now briefed their side of the story via French outlet Le Parisien, insisting their request is both transparent and in the interests of French football as a whole rather than a selfish grab for extra rest.
The Parisian club point to France’s battle for a better UEFA coefficient ranking, the precedent of other Ligue 1 fixtures being moved for European commitments and even Strasbourg’s own attempt to reschedule a league game around their Conference League quarter-final:
“The performances of French clubs involved on the European scene benefit all of French football, in a context where France currently occupies 6th place in the UEFA index for the 2025-2026 season,” the club assures.
“The stakes are high: to secure 5th place in the UEFA index, synonymous with a better representation of French football in European competitions, with up to seven clubs qualified,” PSG said.
“The success of French clubs in Europe also generates direct benefits for all professional clubs, and not only for the teams involved in these competitions. The prospect of seeing two French clubs reach the semi-finals of European competitions represents an important opportunity for Ligue 1, both on a sporting and economic level. ”
“This type of rescheduling has been implemented on a regular basis by the LFP in the past, for the benefit of many French clubs involved in European competitions.”
It’s believed that the LFP will make their decision the postponement request on Thursday.
