Jayben Camacho was tragically killed as he crossed a road on April 2 – but the 16-year-old has managed to save the lives of three people with one final selfless act
A teenage boy has saved the lives of three people in one last selfless act before his death.
On Thursday, April 9, the Chandler Police Department said first responders were called to a crash involving a pedestrian near Arizona Avenue and Detroit Street just after midday on April 2. “The pedestrian, identified as a Chandler High School student, was crossing the road outside of a marked crossing when they were struck by a vehicle, according to initial witness statements,” police said.
The student, identified as Jayben Camacho, was taken to a local hospital and later died, police added. Authorities said the driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators. The crash remains under investigation.
Jayben’s dad, Benny Camacho Jr., told NBC affiliate KPNX that his son’s final act of kindness saved the lives of three people. His heart went to a fellow teenager, while his lungs were donated to somebody who had been on a respirator. Additionally, parts of his liver were given to a 5-month-old child in need.
“After days of fighting, Jayben had been on life support to allow him the gift of giving life to others. In the midst of this heartbreaking loss, he is a donor and his legacy will live on, helping those in need.”
It went on to say: “In the midst of unimaginable loss, Jayben’s legacy is one of life, generosity, and impact. He is a hero, and his story will continue through every life he’s saved.
“His family is now facing the emotional and financial weight that comes with this kind of loss. We are raising funds to help support them during this time, including medical expenses, funeral and memorial costs, and day-to-day needs as they take time to grieve and begin to heal.”
Over $31,000 has already been raised of the $35,000 target.
