Nico Schlotterbeck’s future has been one that Liverpool fans have been keeping an eye on, with Sky Germany now providing a fresh update.
The Reds are understood to have held encouraging discussions with the 26-year-old’s camp, following on from initial contact first reported back in October by DaveOCKOP.
With his current deal running to 2027, this summer has widely been billed as the last realistic chance for Dortmund to cash in for a significant fee if he decides not to renew. That uncertainty has sparked strong interest from Europe’s elite, with Liverpool and Real Madrid among the clubs monitoring the situation.
Dortmund, though, have never hidden their desire to keep him. Now, a fresh update from Sky Germany suggests the momentum is swinging firmly back towards Signal Iduna Park.
According to their report, Dortmund held a new round of negotiations this week involving CEO Lars Ricken, and Schlotterbeck’s agent Björn Etzel, with the discussions described as “harmonious” and moving in a “good direction”. Crucially, Sky add that Schlotterbeck is now “tending more and more” towards agreeing a contract extension with BVB, even if a full breakthrough has not yet been achieved and an announcement is not imminent.
There are still details to iron out, particularly around the structure of a release clause that could allow top clubs to move in further down the line, potentially from 2027 onwards. But Dortmund are said to be optimistic of getting the green light soon, having already upped their salary offer in previous rounds of talks.
For Liverpool, that means what once looked like a genuine opening for a marquee centre-back signing may be closing. Unless negotiations collapse, the latest signals from Germany point towards Schlotterbeck committing his prime years to Dortmund rather than making a Premier League switch this summer.
