What is UPSC CSE all About?

The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a national competitive examination in India conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to higher Civil Services of the Government of India, including the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, and Indian Police Service. It is also colloquially referred to as the UPSC examination, and UPSC CSE.

It’s conducted in three phases: a preliminary examination consisting of two objective-type papers (Paper I consisting of General Studies and Paper II, referred to as the Civil Service Aptitude Test or CSAT), and a main examination consisting of nine papers of conventional (essay) type, in which two papers are qualifying and only marks of seven are counted; finally followed by a personality test (interview).

UPSC CSE Eligibility 2024

In order to sit for the Prelims and Mains examinations, candidates must fulfil particular eligibility standards set out by UPSC.

Age Limit

Applicants must be no older than 32 and at least 21 years old.

Education Qualification

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an Indian university that is accredited by the national or state governments, from colleges that have been approved by Parliament, or from universities that have been specifically designated.
Candidates for the UPSC CSE may also be final-year graduates or those awaiting results. But before they can apply for the UPSC Mains Examination, they have to show that they passed the necessary test.

Nationality

Depending on the service category, different nationalities are required for different UPSC exams. Candidates for the IFS, IPS, and IAS must be citizens of India.
Candidates must be citizens of India, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, persons of Indian origin (PIO) migrating from specific countries with the intention of settling permanently in India, or Tibetan refugees arriving before January 1, 1962, in order to be considered for all other services.
