A reminder of the Stranger Things timeline and how the new Netflix spin-off fits in
A new title makes the timeline for hit Netflix series Stranger Things a bit more complicated.
All episodes of the first spin-off for the streamer’s beloved show are now streaming on the platform. The 10-part series is the first attempt at extending the universe in a major way aside from the stage show.
Titled Tales From 85, fans are taken years back before the story ended with the dramatic finale. At this point in the story, the gang believe that all is well and that they are actually safe having apparently solved the issue of the Upside Down.
Although that is far from the truth in more ways than one. According to the synopsis snow blankets the town, the horrors of the Upside Down are finally fading. Our heroes Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max have settled back into a normal life of D&D, snowball fights, and quiet days.
But beneath the ice, something terrifying has awakened. Could it be from the Upside Down? From the depths of Hawkins Lab? Or from somewhere else entirely? Our heroes must race to solve this mystery and save Hawkins in this new story set in the Stranger Things universe.
So when exactly does the spin-off series Tales From 95 take place? And how does this fit into the Stranger Things timeline? Here’s all you need to know.
When does Stranger Things Tales From 85 take place?
Stranger Things Tales From 8 takes place between Seasons 2 and 3. For those that might need a reminder, the end of the second season sees Eleven forced to return to Hawkins lab, which has since turned into a scene from a nightmare. Accompanied by Hopper, she closes the gate to the Upside Down that she herself opens.
While this is going on, Joyce and Jonathan Byers along with Nancy Wheeler perform what can only be described as a kind of exorcism on a possessed Will, forcing the Mind Flayer out of him. The rest of the gang: Steve, Dustin, Mike, Max and Lucas destroy the veins in the underground tunnels.
The season’s final moments see all the kids attend their Snow Ball dance. Will dances with some random girl who approaches him, Lucas with Max and Dustin with Nancy after being rejected. Hopper gains the paperwork that says Eleven is his legal daughter, named Jane Hopper.

Afterwards, despite being told to keep her in hiding for a year, he allows her to attend the dance as well. There she and Mike share a kiss. It’s around a month later the events of Tales From 85 are supposed to occur.
It is very much set during the middle of winter, with the events of Season 3 not beginning until the summer. In this gap, Dustin is supposed to attend camp where he meets Suzie, and Steve gets his job at Scoops Ahoy where he is introduced to Robin.
Season 3 starts with Joyce Byers considering moving her family away from Hawkins, Hopper intervening with Mike and Eleven’s relationship while Eleven is getting closer with Max.
Will is still having visions thanks to the Mind Flayer and Jonathan and Nancy look into the impact of its influence. Meanwhile Dustin, Steve and Robin investigate a potential Soviet presence in the town and Max’s stepbrother Billy is taken over by the Mind Flayer.
