A woman was frustrated after trying a range of methods to get rid of stubborn hard water stains on her shower fixtures but one surprising product did the trick – and it didn’t involve vinegar or lemon juice
A woman was tired of battling the stubborn hard water stains in her bathroom and, after attempting many methods with no success, it was one simple tip that saved the day. Hard water stains can be incredibly difficult to tackle, turning once-gleaming fixtures dull, cloudy and unsightly.
The stains are caused by a build-up of calcium and magnesium deposits, and are typically tackled using acidic solutions such as white vinegar, lemon juice, or specialist cleaning products. But what happens when none of these work?
This was exactly the situation one woman found herself in, with persistent and unsightly stains ruining her Kohler shower fixtures. Having exhausted all the conventional remedies to no avail, one unexpected product transformed her bathroom – steel wool.
She headed to Reddit to post before and after pictures of her shower, which demonstrate a clear, effective result, and said: “I tried so many recommended solutions to remove hard water stains from my fixtures and the ONLY thing that finally worked was 0000 steel wool.
“Thank you SO MUCH… to everyone who tried to resolve this. Attached before and after pics.”
The comments section quickly filled with responses from fellow Reddit users. One requested a full rundown of her “entire process” and exactly how she “used the 0000 steel wool”.
The woman explained: “The steel wool part was so easy. I just took it out of the package and used it dry. I started gently rubbing it on the metal and immediately the residue started coming off.
“I did circular polishing motion across the fixture and it was done in about three minutes. There was some steel residue in the tub which I wiped up with a damp paper towel. That was literally it!”
She continued: “To clarify, I used no other products. Just dry 0000 steel wool that I ordered in desperation from Amazon.”
Another person was sceptical and commented: “A mixture of vinegar and dawn will do this too. You don’t need steel wool. Source: I do this once a month on our fixtures.”
However, the woman replied: “I tried this and it didn’t work! I think there was just a ton of build up from previous tenants though. I’m guessing if I keep this clean regularly dawn and vinegar will work wonders!”
Another said: “It looks amazing! Now, scrub over it with wax paper to prevent buildup coming back!”
Someone else shared: “I use 0000 on lots of things including glass shower doors. Even mirrors. I’ve even removed fine scratches with it on a mirror. It’s awesome on the thick soap grime as well. In fact, I used it as a final polish when refinishing a retro wood low boy cabinet.”
One commenter offered a word of warning though: “Kohler is still built tough. I would not take steel wool to cheaper fixtures that probably only have a thin layer of chrome on them, or the ones that are plastic painted to look like metal.”
