Gundam was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and the franchise features giant robots, or mecha, known as “Mobile Suits”.
The franchise began with the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979 and it spawned a multimedia franchise that includes more than 50 TV series, films, manga, novels and video games.
Academics in Japan have even taken interest in the series and in 2008, the virtual Gundam Academy was planned to be the first academic establishment based on an animated TV series.
