AC Milan are drawing up ambitious plans for their summer rebuild – and one of the ideas on the table is a move for Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan striker was once considered one of European football’s most explosive centre-forwards, but his switch to Saudi Arabia has not unfolded as hoped, and major clubs are now sensing an opportunity.
After leaving Liverpool last summer in a deal worth roughly £46 million, Nunez headed to Al‑Hilal with a point to prove. His early weeks were encouraging, marked by a handful of goals and the same relentless physicality that had made him such a compelling, if erratic, figure at Anfield.
That all changed in January, however, when Al‑Hilal swooped for Karim Benzema from Al‑Ittihad. Nunez was omitted from the domestic squad for the remainder of the campaign, reduced to AFC Champions League outings only – a big comedown for a player of his profile, age and ambition.
With the squad list now full and Nunez effectively out of the league picture, both club and player are increasingly open to a parting of ways.
That is where Milan come in. Corriere dello Sport are reporting that the Rossoneri are searching for a long‑term striker and want an athletic No.9 who can run in behind, press from the front and attack crosses – boxes Nunez ticks when he is confident and properly utilised.
Milan knows they cannot compete financially with the Saudi clubs, but they can offer something different: San Siro, the Champions League spotlight and the chance to relaunch his European career.
Juventus have also made enquiries, keen to understand what kind of package would be required and whether a loan with option to buy could be negotiated.
The Bianconeri see Nunez as a potential partner – or even replacement – for their existing forwards and are monitoring the situation carefully. Other clubs are expected to circle if Al‑Hilal formally open the door to talks, but Milan are determined not to be passive observers.
For the player, the next move will be crucial as his World Cup ambitions have already been dented by the lack of football at club level.
