FG reopens Nigeria–Niger border to boost trade, regional integration

The newly appointed Comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Kebbi Area Command, Mahmoud Ibrahim

The Federal Government has officially reopened the Nigeria–Niger Republic border through the Kamba corridor in Kebbi State, in a move aimed at strengthening cross-border trade and economic cooperation in the West African sub-region.

The reopening follows a recent similar directive along the Nigeria–Benin border and is part of efforts to revitalise regional commerce and ease the movement of legitimate goods and services.

Speaking at the reopening ceremony, the Area Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service in Kebbi State, Mahmoud Ibrahim, said the agency was implementing presidential directives and ensuring smooth resumption of lawful trade activities.

He stressed that while the border is reopened, Customs would maintain strict monitoring to prevent smuggling and other illegal activities.

Officials from the Federal Operations Unit also warned that enforcement would remain strong despite the reopening, emphasising the need for professionalism and vigilance.

Local leaders and government representatives welcomed the development, describing it as a major economic relief for border communities that depend on cross-border trade for livelihoods.

They, however, urged traders and security agencies to ensure transparency and compliance with regulations to sustain the benefits of the reopening.

The Nigeria–Niger border reopening is expected to boost commerce, improve livelihoods in border areas, and strengthen Nigeria’s economic ties within West Africa.
