The Edo State Police Command has issued a public disclaimer following a viral video showing an aide to Governor Monday Okpebholo, popularly known as Agogo the Towncrier, making controversial remarks directed at opposition figures.

The video, which has circulated widely on social media, captured the aide addressing the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, while making statements about members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

In the footage, the aide was heard saying he would hand over any ADC member found in the state to the police, while also referring to Peter Obi in derogatory terms, a remark that sparked widespread criticism online.

Observers also questioned the reaction of the police commissioner, who appeared to smile during the exchange, further fuelling public debate about the appropriateness of the moment.

Police distance self from comments

In response to the backlash, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Eno Ikoedem, issued a statement on Saturday distancing the command from the remarks made in the video.

She stressed that the comments were personal to the individual seen in the footage and did not represent the position or approval of the Commissioner of Police or the Edo State Police Command.

The command also clarified that at no point did the Commissioner endorse or align with the statements made during the exchange.
