Mike Arnold, a former mayor in the United States, has called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), during a presentation before members of the US Congress.

Arnold used the session to criticise the Nigerian government’s handling of insecurity, alleging that authorities have not done enough to confront violent extremism and terrorism in parts of the country.

Call for Kanu’s release

During his remarks, Arnold referenced the trial and conviction of Kanu, arguing that the Nigerian government applies different standards in dealing with separatist agitators and violent extremist groups.

He urged US lawmakers to seek the release of Kanu and others he described as prisoners of conscience.

Nnamdi Kanu, who is facing legal proceedings in Nigeria over terrorism-related allegations, remains one of the most controversial political figures in the country.

Security concerns raised

Arnold also pointed to recent terrorist attacks and growing insecurity, rejecting descriptions that some violence is purely linked to farmer-herder disputes.

He further criticised what he described as inadequate responses to threats made by certain religious figures, citing reports of a cleric who allegedly placed a monetary reward over comments made by a Christian pastor.

According to him, stronger and more balanced enforcement of the law is needed to build public confidence.

Remarks on Sultan of Sokoto

The former US mayor also mentioned the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, accusing the traditional ruler of not doing enough to publicly condemn killings and violent groups operating in parts of Northern Nigeria.

He further questioned comments credited to the Sultan regarding the expansion of Islamic arbitration panels into southern states.

Mixed reactions expected

Arnold’s comments are expected to generate reactions in both Nigeria and abroad, especially on issues relating to insecurity, religious tensions and the continued detention of Kanu.

Nigerian authorities have repeatedly stated that security challenges are being addressed through military operations, intelligence efforts and legal processes, while Kanu’s case remains subject to the courts.
