A presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, has called for a united opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on the sidelines of the National Opposition Summit held in Ibadan on Saturday, the development economist said Nigeria’s current challenges require a coordinated response that goes beyond any single political party or individual.

He said unity among opposition groups has become necessary to present Nigerians with a credible alternative ahead of the next election cycle.

“Nigeria is at a defining moment,” Hayatu-Deen said. “The deepening insecurity, the crushing cost of living and the steady erosion of democratic space demand a collective response. This is not about personal ambition, it is about national rescue.”

He warned that continued division within the opposition could strengthen the current political order and worsen the hardship faced by citizens.

Hayatu-Deen urged political leaders to move beyond rhetoric and show commitment to cooperation, sacrifice and shared objectives.

At the summit, he held consultations with several opposition figures, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.

He also met with summit conveners Professor Jerry Gana of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Kashim Imam, in what was described as part of growing efforts toward opposition alignment.

Hayatu-Deen said the 2027 elections present an opportunity to change Nigeria’s direction, but only if opposition leaders prioritise national interest over personal and party considerations.

He added that Nigerians expect leadership that is unifying and capable of addressing key national challenges.

Reaffirming his commitment to the ADC, he pledged to work with party stakeholders and other political actors to build a broad coalition focused on improving security, stabilising the economy, and restoring trust in democratic institutions.
