Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has intervened in an emerging controversy surrounding a woman who says she is facing threats after publicly questioning the content of a children’s storybook she believes contains inappropriate and violent themes.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, the senator said she had been alerted to the situation involving a woman who allegedly came under pressure after raising concerns about what she described as disturbing material in a book intended for young readers.

She said the matter points to a broader concern about how children’s educational content is reviewed and the need to ensure that such materials do not expose children to graphic or harmful narratives.

According to Akpoti-Uduaghan, content designed for children must be carefully screened, stressing that it should never be distressing or capable of normalising violence, particularly violence directed at animals or vulnerable subjects.

She emphasised that safeguarding children’s mental and emotional development is a collective responsibility that involves parents, publishers, and education authorities.

The senator also maintained that parents have a legitimate right to question and examine the materials their children are exposed to, especially when concerns arise about suitability or messaging.

She called on publishers and educational content providers to remain open to public feedback, noting that constructive scrutiny is part of maintaining appropriate standards in learning materials.

Akpoti-Uduaghan further urged relevant government agencies, including the Ministry of Education, to take a more proactive role in ensuring that all approved learning materials meet required child safety and content standards.

She strongly condemned what she described as threats or intimidation linked to the woman’s complaint, insisting that such responses are unacceptable in a democratic society.

The senator said she was seeking immediate contact with the woman involved so that the matter could be properly addressed and the situation clarified.

The controversy began after a viral video in which the woman alleged that a passage in her child’s storybook described an elderly man punishing a dog in a violent manner for failing to perform a task, a depiction she argued was unsuitable for children.

She explained that she initially shared her concerns online out of worry as a first-time mother, saying she wanted clarification on whether such content was appropriate in modern children’s books.

According to her, she later deleted the post after being asked to take it down but claimed that she continued to receive threats even after complying.

She further alleged that people close to her were being targeted and that she feared for her safety and that of her family, claiming that some individuals had already been picked up by the police.

The woman also said she received an official invitation which she feared could lead to her arrest, adding that she lacked the financial resources to engage legal representation.

She appealed publicly for support, calling on Nigerians, parents, and lawyers to come to her aid as she insisted that her intention was not to create controversy but to protect her children.

The situation has since sparked wider public debate online, with discussions focusing on the regulation of children’s educational content, the rights of parents to challenge school materials, and concerns about freedom of expression in response to public criticism.
