The Nigeria Police Force has approved the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, following the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings.
In a statement from Force Headquarters in Abuja, police spokesperson Anthony Okon Placid said the officers were earlier withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to Abuja on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to undergo an expedited review.
The Force said its Disciplinary Committee, alongside other internal mechanisms, investigated the incident and confirmed serious violations of operational procedures, particularly regarding the use of firearms.
According to the findings, the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, was found to have acted in breach of established regulations governing the use of force, with the police describing his conduct as unlawful and unprofessional.
The committee subsequently recommended the dismissal of Usman and other officers found culpable, a decision that has been approved by the Inspector-General and forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final ratification.
Authorities also confirmed that once administrative procedures are completed, the officers will be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution over the incident, which has been classified as an extrajudicial killing.
The police leadership reiterated its stance against misconduct, stressing that the institution maintains a zero-tolerance policy on abuse of power and unlawful actions by its personnel.
It stated that no officer has the right to take a life outside the provisions of the law and warned that violations would attract both disciplinary and legal consequences.
The Force extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that the matter would be pursued in a transparent manner to ensure accountability.
It also urged members of the public to remain calm while legal processes continue.
Meanwhile, civil society groups have condemned the incident, describing it as an extrajudicial execution. The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre said footage of the incident showed the victim restrained and pleading before he was shot.
The Take It Back Movement in Delta State also called for a thorough and independent investigation into the killing, urging authorities to ensure justice is served.
