A family meeting intended to resolve a long-running marital dispute ended in tragedy in Beitbridge, Zimbabwe, when a man allegedly attacked and killed his wife in front of relatives.
Police identified the suspect as 56-year-old Mukhosi Shadreck Mulaudzi Muthavhatsindi of Malala village. He and his wife had recently returned from South Africa, where they had been living together despite ongoing tensions in their marriage.
Authorities said the couple arrived back in Zimbabwe on April 24 but went their separate ways, with the husband returning to his rural home while the wife stayed with her family in Matshiloni village. In an effort to address their differences, relatives from both sides convened a mediation meeting on April 26.
During the discussions, family members reportedly suggested that the couple consider divorce after failing to resolve their issues over a prolonged period. According to Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, this proposal triggered a heated argument.
The situation escalated rapidly when the suspect allegedly reacted violently. Witnesses said he charged toward his wife, prompting her to flee and seek cover behind a house within the homestead. He reportedly caught up with her and stabbed her once in the chest.
The woman cried out before collapsing and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, the suspect attempted to escape but was chased down and captured by members of the community, who later handed him over to the police.
He is currently in custody and is expected to appear in court, while the victim’s body has been taken for a post-mortem examination. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
