South Korea’s entertainment industry is in mourning following the death of actor Park Dong-bin, who was found dead on Wednesday, April 29, at the age of 56.
Park’s body was discovered inside a restaurant in Pyeongtaek that he had been preparing to open, according to reports. An acquaintance who had been assisting him with the business reportedly found him at the premises.
Police authorities in Pyeongtaek said there were no immediate signs of foul play at the scene, and no note was recovered. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of his death.
The actor is survived by his wife, Lee Sang-yi, whom he married six years ago, and their three-year-old daughter, Jiyu.
Park had previously spoken publicly about his daughter’s serious health condition. In a 2024 appearance on a counselling programme, he revealed that she was born with left heart hypoplastic syndrome, a congenital condition affecting the development of the heart.
He explained that she required urgent medical intervention shortly after birth and had already undergone multiple surgeries in her early years.
During the same interview, Park also reflected on the challenges of fatherhood later in life, expressing concerns about his ability to provide long-term support for his family and noting that people often mistook him for his daughter’s grandfather.
Funeral arrangements have been announced, with a wake scheduled to take place at Domin Funeral Hall in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province on Friday. His remains are expected to be laid to rest after passing through Yongin Forest of Peace.
