The Kwara State Police Command has uncovered an alleged kidnapping syndicate’s plan in which members reportedly used a female accomplice to move rifles and ammunition intended for coordinated attacks within the state.
This was disclosed over the weekend in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, who said the operation led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of three AK-47 rifles, magazines, and live ammunition in Ilorin, the state capital.
The suspects, identified as Adamu Ibrahim, 30, and Sani Musa, 29, were arrested following credible intelligence and sustained surveillance by police operatives.
According to the statement, preliminary investigations showed that the suspects allegedly transferred their weapons to a female accomplice in an attempt to avoid detection, with the arms meant to be moved to a designated location for planned criminal operations.
The police said that during interrogation, the suspects led operatives to a hideout where three AK-47 rifles, five AK-47 magazines, and 143 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition were recovered.
The command further stated that the suspects and other fleeing members of the syndicate were allegedly moving in small groups toward a convergence point before the planned attacks were disrupted through intelligence-led policing.
It added that the suspects reportedly confessed to being part of a kidnapping syndicate operating within and around the state.
The police confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and assisting investigators with efforts to track down other members of the network and prevent further criminal activity, adding that they will be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
