A critic who tried out Jeremy Clarkson’s food vans was left floored when he tasted what was on offer. Danny Malin travelled to Clarkson’s now-famous Cotswolds pub, The Farmer’s Dog in Asthall, Oxfordshire, bringing along his tried-and-tested portable table and chairs to sample the on-site food vans.

Upon arrival, Danny joined a lengthy queue to order his food and pointed out the vans — charmingly titled The Farmer’s Dough and The Farmer’s Puppy — before selecting a Big View Burger, loaded fries, a farmhouse pizza, and wild garlic bread.

Danny, who filmed his trip for the Danny vs Food YouTube channel, was next seen sitting at his table with the feast in front of him. The sun beat down as he dined al fresco in what appeared to be a garden, with a pergola-like structure in the background.

He started with the garlic bread, dubbing the cheese “absolutely gorgeous” with a “real nice thickness”. He said the base was “nice and soft” and had a “doughy” crust, summing it up as “delicious”.

Moving on to the farmhouse pizza, which was covered with a popular topping choice of ham and mushroom, Danny noted that the meal was slightly larger than the garlic bread, and boasted a “fantastic” sauce with a “beautiful sweetness” and a “tang”.

Danny said it was cooked perfectly, with thick-cut mushrooms and ham, and that it had a “beautiful saltiness”. He added that he couldn’t “fault” the offering, praising its “great” flavour.

He then sampled the loaded fries, complete with garlic mayo and cheese. Danny pointed out there was “plenty of mayo” before complimenting the “delicious” cheese and “rich and creamy” mayo.

Danny, also known for his appearances on the channel Danny & Gary, said: “I absolutely love this. This is like…sit out here. I imagine if I managed to get me hands on a pint of that awesome beer, I’d be living the dream.”

He did, however, note that the portion of fries cost a steep £9.50, but said he could justify the price by the taste of the cheese, which he described as “amazing,” and by the fairly generous portion.

Danny then tucked into the £14 Big View burger, featuring baconnaise, lettuce, pickles, beer-soaked onions, and cheddar cheese served on a “beautiful” soft bun. As he took his first bite, he noted that the onions had a nice “sharp flavour”.

He described the beef patty as “juicy” and “gorgeous”, adding they had “got the combination of flavours bob on”. Danny also said the lettuce and pickles added an “earthy taste”. In his final review, he heaped praise on the food and revealed that he’d spent £48.50.

Danny said: “What a beautiful setting this is. What a beautiful place for people to come with a family. You know, you never know. You might see Jeremy walking around now and again.

“But if not, you can definitely sit down, and you can enjoy some food. I think, value for money, I think that’s all right, you know. I’m not going to grumble at that because of where we are. It’s a day out.

“It’s an activities to come and do with your family. Some places charge a lot more for food that’s a lot less quality than this. Overall, I’ve enjoyed everything.”

He went on to say: “But for me, it’s nothing less than a solid 10 because I’ve really enjoyed it.”
