Robbie Fowler summed up the feelings of Liverpool’s fans perfectly as he posted his verdict on the Reds’ dramatic Merseyside derby victory.

Virgil van Dijk’s header deep into stoppage time secured a 2-1 win over Everton, and gave Liverpool bragging rights in the first ever meeting between the two sides at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Mohamed Salah had opened the scoring during the first half, with Beto equalizing for the hosts after the break.

The Reds though completed a league double over their neighbors, having also won 2-1 at Anfield in September, to leave themselves well placed to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Liverpool now sits seven points clear of its nearest rival, Chelsea, in the race for the top five. That means Arne Slot’s side needs a maximum of nine points from its remaining five games in order to secure a place at Europe’s top table.

Van Dijk’s last-gasp header caps off what has been a near-perfect weekend for the Reds after the disappointment of being knocked out of Europe by Paris Saint-Germain in midweek, with Fowler summing up the emotions perfectly.

Taking to X after Van Dijk’s goal, the former striker simply posted: “You sexy b——s”.

Slot was among those revelling in the victory, telling BBC Sport: “Throughout the season, all these games with all these games and the limited players available have hurt and cost us quite a lot of points. But today is definitely a day for the fans to be happy. That’s what we will be.

“We are going to enjoy it. My staff, my players and me. There is no difference between us and the fans; we would have loved to have had a better season than we’ve had.

“But for obvious reasons, we haven’t, and we saw that today. How many times do you have two goalkeepers injured?

“That has been our season, but we managed to win, and that’s the most important thing.”

Liverpool.com says: There aren’t many better tonics than a last-minute winner in a derby are there? Suddenly, everything feels a lot rosier for Liverpool!

Once the dust settles, it shouldn’t mask what has been a dismal campaign, but for now, the Reds and their fans have every right to enjoy this win.
