Dominik Szoboszlai capped off another great afternoon in a Liverpool shirt on Sunday, delivering the inch-perfect corner that Virgil van Dijk nodded past Jordan Pickford in the 100th minute to seal a 2-1 Merseyside derby win at the Hill Dickinson.
But the Hungarian sees his contract expire in 2028, and is a conversation that refuses to go away among the Liverpool fanbase.
Szoboszlai has been arguably Liverpool’s most consistent performer across the entire season, shuttling between central midfield, right midfield and even an emergency shift at right-back without ever looking out of place.
Now speaking to the media including the Liverpool Echo, Szoboszlai said that while there is no “real progression” over a new deal – he sees himself as a Liverpool player for the future:
“As I said (a few weeks ago), there has been no real progression,” Szoboszlai said. “So I cannot say anything new about my contract situation. We have a lot of games to go and I am focusing on that.”
“As you guys maybe know, my contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let’s see.”
“Of course I see myself here in the long term, but as I say, it is not really in my hands anymore.”-
He added that he relaxed at the club and that his family is happy on Merseyside:
“I love being here, as I’ve said many times. I love the fans and I really like to be here. My family is happy. Let’s see.
“I’m completely relaxed. We have five games to go. Then I am going to rest – a big one, after my international break. Then we will see.
“The fans’ support, it means a lot. Every time they chant my name, it means a lot. I think we made it clear what happened against Manchester City at the Etihad.”
“I think what [Arne Slot] said [about Liverpool having a bright future] is right. We brought in new players – young, talented players.”
“We know what they can do and that they can help the team – that is why they are here. I’m really looking forward to playing with them for the next five games, for sure, and hopefully in the future as well.”
The Hungarian has managed 12 goals and 9 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions this season.
Szoboszlai sounds like a man genuinely content at Liverpool and fully invested in the club. But with Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson also set to leave on free transfers this summer, and Konate’s situation still unresolved, the club cannot afford to let another pillar of this squad drift into the final 18 months of his deal without pen being put to paper.
