Plenty of Liverpool’s old boys are quietly building a new life on the touchline.In Spain, former Reds defender Alvaro Arbeloa has been rising through the coaching ranks at Real Madrid, first cutting his teeth with the youth sides before stepping up to take on a leading role after Xabi Alonso’s departure.
Over in Germany, Albert Riera has been steering Eintracht Frankfurt since the turn of the year, adding the Bundesliga to a coaching journey that has already taken in spells across Europe.
Now former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam is pushing hard to make his own mark in the dugout, with the former Liverpool midfielder currently working towards his UEFA Pro Licence.
Adam recently shared images from a three‑day stint at UEFA’s headquarters as part of a Pro Licence student exchange, describing it as an “incredible” learning experience alongside coaches from across the continent.
It is the next step on a coaching pathway that began with his badges in Northern Ireland and reflects a clear ambition to build a long‑term career in management.
The 39‑year‑old’s first crack at senior management came with Fleetwood Town, where he was appointed on New Year’s Eve 2023 before leaving the club in December 2024 after a poor run of results in League Two. Since then he has stayed in the game with behind‑the‑scenes roles, including work on set pieces at Everton and an academy position at Burnley, keeping him close to the training pitch while he completes his qualifications.
According to reports in Scotland, Adam has also thrown his hat into the ring for the vacant St Mirren job, the club where he enjoyed a successful loan spell earlier in his playing days.
