For many Liverpool FC supporters, the story starts long before the dugout.
It goes back to January 2011.
That was when Andy Carroll arrived from Newcastle United for £35 million.
At the time, it made him the most expensive British player in history.
He was brought in alongside Luis Suárez to replace Fernando Torres. Expectations were high.
His Liverpool spell had moments, but it never fully clicked.
He made 58 appearances.
He scored 11 goals and added four assists.
His impact was stronger in cup competitions.
He scored a key header against Everton FC in the FA Cup semi-final.
He also scored in the final against Chelsea FC.
By 2012, the system under Brendan Rodgers did not suit him.
He was loaned to West Ham United and later moved permanently.
Since then, his career has taken him across England and even France.
Now, it has taken another unexpected turn.
Carroll has now stepped into management.
He took charge of Dagenham & Redbridge on an interim basis.
The club plays in the National League South.
This is the sixth tier of English football.
Teams here are fighting for promotion into the National League and eventually the EFL.
His first game came against Torquay United. It ended in a 1–0 win.
The only goal came in the second half.
George Marsh scored directly from a corner.
Carroll admitted the moment was not easy.
He said, “Honestly, before the game, I was all nerves and a little bit stressed.”
“We’ve only had two days to work on a few things and they stuck to the game plan.
“It’s just an amazing feeling when you work hard in the office, in the rooms, and you come out and see what they do there. It’s fantastic.
“I don’t even know how I’ve ended up in this role, but I’ll do anything for this club at the end of the day.
“I’m part of it now. Whether I’m a player, whether I’m a manager, owner, picking up the litter, whatever it is, I’ll do it for this club.”
“That’s something I’ll do forever now.”
The win came in front of co-owner KSI.
It also moved the club closer to the play-off places.
From Anfield to the dugout, this is a new chapter.
And it has started well.
