Arne Slot praised Rio Ngumoha after the 17-year-old delivered a great performance to inspire Liverpool’s 2–0 win over Fulham at Anfield.
Liverpool delivered a much-needed 2–0 win over Fulham at Anfield in the Premier League, ending a three-game losing run and restoring confidence ahead of the decisive Champions League second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.
The result came at a critical point in the season.
Arne Slot’s side had been under pressure after a poor run of form, but this performance showed renewed control and intent, especially in the first half.
The breakthrough arrived in the 36th minute through Rio Ngumoha.
The 17-year-old marked his first Anfield start in style.
He received the ball from Florian Wirtz, beat Timothy Castagne with quick footwork, and curled a precise finish into the bottom corner.
It was a goal that lifted both the crowd and the team.
Liverpool struck again just four minutes later.
Ngumoha was again involved in the build-up before Cody Gakpo laid the ball into the path of Mohamed Salah, who finished calmly for his 256th goal for the club in what was his first Anfield appearance since confirming his summer exit.
Liverpool controlled possession with 56 percent and registered 14 shots, six of which were on target.
Fulham threatened in the second half but failed to convert key chances.
Rodrigo Muniz headed wide from close range, while Emile Smith Rowe volleyed narrowly off target late on.
Slot’s tactical adjustments also played a role.
Andy Robertson returned to the starting XI to a strong reception, while Ryan Gravenberch replaced Curtis Jones at halftime after a minor knock.
Liverpool held firm to secure a clean sheet, a rare outcome in recent weeks.
After the match, Slot pointed to Ngumoha’s directness and growing importance to the team.
“One of his strengths is dominating the one-v-one.”
“We’ve seen this season that he gets more and more and more playing time.”
“That’s what he deserves because every time he plays, he does really well.”
The manager also stressed the importance of end product, especially in high-pressure matches.
“His influence in the game, like he did today and against Wolves.”
“Today, he even scored a goal which is vital in football because goals matter a lot.”
Ngumoha’s performance now raises real questions ahead of the PSG clash, with strong calls for the teenager to start as Liverpool look to overturn a 2–0 deficit.
