Liverpool fell to a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Manchester City this afternoon.
In what promised to be an intense and fiery FA Cup quarter-final, it failed to deliver as the Reds demonstrated a lack of belief to get back into the game after City went ahead.
Virgil van Dijk’s challenge in the box sent Nico O’Reilly tumbling to the floor and Erling Haaland opened the scoring from the spot.
Before that incident, Liverpool had started the game well and conceding in that way came as a real area of frustration for Arne Slot.
Reflecting on the game post-match whilst speaking to TNT Sports, he cut a crestfallen figure, saying: “Very disappointing, not only to be out but also the manner. Another big disappointment from us.”
“Things have been missing for large parts of this season, converting chances into goals, that’s the thing that was missing in the first half because I think it was an equal game up until that moment they scored the penalty.”
“Last time we played here we conceded before half-time, today again. Mentally not easy but we tried to pick things up at half-time but 5-10 minutes later they scored twice.”
“So that doesn’t help our mood especially with the season we’ve had. Going out hoping to come back in the game immediately getting punished that is really hard to take. Only good thing is we didn’t concede more.”
The Haaland opener knocked the wind out of Liverpool’s sails and the Norwegian doubled his tally for the day with a header just before half-time.
The lack of fight will have worried Arne Slot and as he touched on in that post-match interview, the lack of belief has stemmed from the difficult season they have had.
The second goal this afternoon was damaging, and when former Liverpool target Antoine Semenyo chipped Mamardashvili to put the home side 3-0 up in the 50th minute, it all but confirmed their passage into the next round.
Erling Haaland went on to complete his hat-trick and Mohamed Salah missed a penalty in what was an embarrassing result for Liverpool.
With pressure now increasing once again on Arne Slot, the Reds face the daunting prospect of heading to Paris to face PSG in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.
The reigning European champions will be looking to knock Liverpool out in back-to-back seasons after Arne Slot’s side crashed out of the competition in the round of sixteen last year after a penalty shoot-out where Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez missed from the spot.
PSG are four points clear at the top of Ligue 1 and convincingly sailed past Chelsea in the round of sixteen via an aggregate score of 8-2.
Liverpool will face a real challenge to knock them out of the competition this season.
