Armani Deshawn Lyons was being looked after by a 71-year-old babysitter when he was shot in the head at an Atlanta apartment on Easter Sunday – police have now charged a babysitter with murder

A three-year-old boy has sadly died after he was shot in the head on Easter Sunday.

Armani Deshawn Lyons was being looked after by a 71-year-old babysitter when emergency services were called to an Atlanta apartment on Easter Sunday. Crews responded to reports a person was shot around 12:37 a.m. on April 5 near the 900 block of Washington Street SW, according to Atlanta Police Department.

When they arrived, they found a young child suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The child was taken to a hospital by ambulance, where medical personnel pronounced him dead, police said. The 71-year-old sitter charged in the case is now in custody while a second suspect remains at large.

“Investigators with the Homicide Unit responded to the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation continues. Please keep in mind that the information released is preliminary in nature and could change as the investigation progresses or new information comes to light.

“Homicide Investigators were able to establish probable cause and obtain arrest warrants for 71-year-old Barbara Edwards and 35-year-old Jermaine Hardeman. They are both being charged with Felony Murder, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Cruelty to Children in the Second Degree.

“On April 13th 2026, around 8:13pm, officers were dispatched to 2944 Landrum Drive in reference to a wanted person, Barbara Edwards. Edwards was taken into custody and charged with Cruelty to Children, Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a convicted Felon. Jermaine Hardeman is not in custody as this time. The investigation continues.”
