Trent Alexander-Arnold’s absence from England’s latest squad for the friendlies against Uruguay and Japan has sparked fresh debate across the football world.
The Real Madrid right-back, who joined the Spanish giants last summer, is widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in the game.
His omission from Thomas Tuchel’s 35-man selection has raised eyebrows, particularly given the depth of talent now available for England in that position.
Alexander-Arnold’s exclusion comes amid a highly competitive situation at right-back.
Players like Ben White and Tino Livramento have impressed in recent camps, and their consistency is being rewarded.

What used to feel like an automatic spot for Trent is now far from guaranteed.
Tuchel made it clear that his decision is a “sporting decision,” and he acknowledged it could feel tough or even unfair.
The timing is significant, as England drew 1-1 against Uruguay on March 27 and now prepare to face Japan on March 31.
These matches are critical for shaping the squad that will head to the 2026 World Cup, and at the moment, Trent is not part of the immediate picture.
David Beckham, speaking to talkSPORT, offered a sympathetic and measured perspective.
He said, “That’s why I’m not England manager, because I don’t have to make those decisions.”
“But, I’m a massive fan of Trent.”
“I’ve heard so many times about, ‘Well, he’s not as good at defending as he is [attacking]’.”
“Well, sometimes you have to accept that.”
“Roberto Carlos was an unbelievable defender, but also unbelievable going forward.”
Beckham added, “With Trent, would I take him?”
“I’d find it very hard not to take someone like Trent.”
“But then Thomas, he’s come out and said, I think I read it this morning, that there are other players that are ahead of him at the moment.”
“But he said ‘at the moment’, so that could change.”
“I think you said, tonight [Friday] might prove that other players are playing that might not get in the squad, so you don’t know.”
“This is very close to picking a final squad, but I still think that Thomas is probably still considering about Trent as well.”
Beckham’s comments underline that while the omission stings, the door is not fully closed.
For Liverpool fans, seeing Trent continue to fight for recognition at both club and international level is a reminder of the unique talent he brings, especially going forward.
