Anfield was full again for a special occasion as Liverpool Legends drew 2–2 with Borussia Dortmund Legends.
Over 60,000 fans turned up, setting a record for the LFC Foundation.
It felt like a proper matchday, even if it was for charity.
Liverpool started fast.
Jay Spearing opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a stunning strike from distance.
It was one of those goals that had the whole stadium buzzing.
Then Djibril Cissé made it 2–0 in the 34th minute after a sharp pass from Steven Gerrard.
The first half was all Liverpool.
Steven Gerrard controlled the game, while Thiago Alcantara completed passes with ease.
But Dortmund came back after the break.
Lucas Barrios pulled one back, and David Odonkor equalised late on with a quick counter.
It was a game of moments.
Klopp’s fist pumps at full-time reminded everyone of what this club has been under Jurgen Klopp.
Still, the mood around the club is mixed.
Last season, Liverpool won the league with 71 points at this stage.
Now they sit 5th with 49 points. Goals have dropped, and the defence has struggled.
The team has already conceded more goals than in the entire title-winning campaign.
With seven games left, the focus is now on securing Champions League football under Arne Slot.
After the game, speaking to The Redmen TV Dirk Kuyt addressed the pressure around the current manager.
He made it clear that managing Liverpool always comes with expectations.
“For a manager of Liverpool, there’s always pressure.”
“And if you ask Jürgen the same question, I think everyone showed at the stadium today—he was and is really loved.”
“But also, he had to get results in for a club like Liverpool.”
Kuyt pointed to last season’s success but admitted this campaign has been tougher.
“Last season was something really amazing to win the league… and this year I think the team is working really hard to get that momentum back again.”
“We want them to do better in the Premier League, but if you want to have success, you have to work really hard.”
He also kept hope alive for Europe.
“Liverpool has always been a European team who can have a lot of success, and who knows, they can still do it this year in the Champions League.”
On new signings, he asked for patience.
“To adapt to English football is not easy; it’s not for everyone to be an immediate impact.”
“I believe in the second season he understands what the culture in the Liverpool club is about, and then he can fully focus on his performance.”
Kuyt ended with a reminder about Mohamed Salah.
“I think we have to be very appreciative and grateful for what he has done for the club.”
“I think his impact will be really felt once he is not here anymore.”
“That’s usually how it is—in the moment we tend to forget really quick.”
